History:
A breed of considerable antiquity, the Shih Tzu traces its roots to
small dogs kept by the Chinese Royal Court. These dogs were highly
coveted by the emperor, who had his favorites memorialized in paintings
and tapestries. Today they are very popular house pets, known for their
beautiful flowing coats and gentle demeanor.
Temperament:
The Shih Tzu makes an ideal apartment pet being small, quiet and needing
only moderate exercise. Intelligent and affable, they take well to
training. They are docile enough to be trusted with gentle children, and
get along well with other animals. Shih Tzus will make friends with
everyone they meet, with their outgoing and friendly personalities they
know no strangers.
Maintenance: The coat should be brushed weekly to keep it in good
condition. The hair on top of the head is usually pulled back with a
rubber band or clip to keep it out of the dog's eyes.
