History:
This breed is over 2,000 years old. With it's thick heavy coat it is
likely that the Chow Chow originated in the far North and then moved
down to Mongolia and China. This breed had many diverse purposes in
Chinese society, they were favored hunting dogs of the emperor, guard
dogs, and also used for their hides and meat.
Temperament:
The Chow Chow today is a beloved family pet. They have unique
personalities and are more independent and cat-like than most dogs.
Early socialization and training is a must with this breed.
Maintenance: Their long thick coats need to be brushed daily to
keep them free of mats, and also make them susceptible to overheating.
Daily exercise in a large fenced area will keep them from getting lazy
and overweight.

The name "Chow Chow" is actually English slang for the large
variety of items brought back from the East on British trade
ships. Since this breed was often among the contents, the
nickname was given to them too. |
