History:
Beagle-type dogs have been around for at least a thousand years. They
were used for hunting small game, and often hunted in packs. These dogs
were bred for hunting ability rather than looks, resulting in a wide
variety of sizes and weights. Most ranged from small to smaller, as
larger dogs would have a hard time tracking rabbits (their favored game)
through dense brush.
Temperament:
The Beagle is a popular family pet as they are known for their affection
and loyalty. They can be good playmates for children and get along well
with other pets. Bred for their independence, the Beagle should not be
allowed off-leash because they have a tendency to wander. They should
not be left alone for extended periods, they enjoy being with their
family and may bark or howl when alone.
Maintenance: Beagles have a somewhat undeserved reputation for
being difficult to train, its just that they are intelligent,
independent and bore easily with repetitive training.
